"Unusual equipment is a common deal breaker, too. How many times has a couscous recipe been cast aside because there is no couscousière in the house?"
What's your recipe deal breaker? I tend to back away from any recipe with a long list of things I don't have in the pantry. I don't want to spend $50 stocking the kitchen with ingredients I may never use again.

I think one of my more frustrating things is when the recipe includes all sorts of spices that we don't have (and we already have so many already). The thing is that spices are EXPENSIVE! I'd be willing to get X or Y, but when the dish ends up being $50 because of all of the spices, that's frustrating for me.
I was going to say the same thing as Jenny. Similarly, I the recipe may call for a small amount of fresh thyme (for example) but you have to buy a bunch of it which will go bad before I ever use it.
My deal-breaker is when John doesn't want to make it. :-)
